As someone who tends to lean on the anxious side, I always like to arrive at events well ahead of time. This week, though, things didn’t go as planned. The match had been rescheduled, but despite the change, we still managed to get there with plenty of time to spare. Before heading into the ground, we took a moment to pay our respects at the memorial for the 97, laying a rose and observing a moment of silence. It’s always a humbling experience, a reminder of the history and heart of this club.
We had plenty of time to soak up the pre-match atmosphere. We joined the queue at the Barclays Women’s Super League stand and grabbed some foam hands (because who can resist a bit of matchday fun?) while enjoying the lively beats of the Samba band.
Once inside, the atmosphere was already building, thanks to an incredible DJ set by Lauren Lo Sung. Her music had the crowd buzzing, and her final song, paired with a stunning light show from the Anfield lights, was nothing short of epic.
Andrea was over the moon to wave a flag at the start of the match. It’s those little moments—the flags, the chants, the shared excitement—that make the atmosphere so electric. And honestly, I’ve come to realize that it’s not the result that makes a night special. It’s the passion of the fans, the dedication of the players, and the sense of community that fills the stadium. A win? That’s just the cherry on top. Sharing these moments with my family is something I’ll never take for granted.
Now, let’s talk about the game. I’ll admit, I was nervous leading up to it. Manchester United have been in phenomenal form—conceding only six goals all season, with seven straight wins under their belt. Their last loss came against the WSL league leaders, so they were the clear favorites. The first 40 minutes were tense, to say the least. Manchester United pressed hard, dominating possession and keeping the ball in our half for what felt like an eternity.
And then, Olivia Smith happened. What. A. Player. Every time she gets the ball, my heart skips a beat because you just know something special is about to happen. And special it was—she weaved through United’s defense like it was nothing, leaving players in her wake before slotting the ball into the net. That goal changed everything. You could feel the shift in the stadium—the players lifted their heads, the fans found their voices, and hope surged through the stands.
But in football, a 1-0 lead is never safe. Just five minutes later, Olivia Smith was at it again, this time getting the ball on the edge of our penalty area, slotting it to Sam Kerr. Kerr held the ball brilliantly, waiting for support, and Fuka Nagano delivered, scoring her first goal for Liverpool just before halftime. 2-0. What a moment!
The second half was a different story. We came out with confidence, playing with more possession and attacking intent. Rachel Laws, our goalkeeper, was an absolute rock, making some crucial saves to keep us in the game. We had three penalty shouts in the second half, with the third—a foul on Alejandra Bernabé—finally given. Olivia Smith stepped up and coolly converted, sealing her place as the star of the night.
We did concede one goal, which dashed our hopes of a clean sheet, but the final result was still something to celebrate. The players’ faces at the final whistle said it all—this win meant everything. A first win at Anfield, a third consecutive victory, and Fuka Nagano’s first goal for the club. As a Liverpool fan, those are the kind of stats that make you smile from ear to ear.
What a night it was—a perfect blend of emotion, passion, and football. Nights like these remind me why I love this game and this club. Here’s to many more! YNWA.
